Controls Engineer — PLC / HMI / SCADA

Position Overview
CSI Metrics is seeking a capable controls and automation professional to help design, program, modernize, and support industrial control systems throughout Northern and Central California. This is an opportunity to take meaningful ownership of PLC, HMI, SCADA, telemetry, and industrial-networking work while collaborating directly with a senior controls engineer with more than 30 years of experience.
Our work primarily supports municipal water infrastructure, with additional projects in food and beverage manufacturing and other industrial environments. Projects range from new control systems and facility expansions to telemetry upgrades, network improvements, and modernization of aging or discontinued systems.
We are looking for someone who already understands controls fundamentals and can contribute productively with moderate guidance. You do not need to know every platform we use, but you should be able to approach industrial systems methodically, write and troubleshoot control logic, and make sound decisions around operating equipment and critical infrastructure.
Responsibilities
We’re looking for someone with experience in:
- Developing or modifying PLC programs
- Configuring HMI or SCADA systems
- Control-platform migrations and legacy-system modernization
- Supporting telemetry, industrial communications, remote access, and control-system networking
- Developing alarms, trends, data displays, and reports
- Assisting with upgrades and migrations involving aging or discontinued control systems
- Reviewing process descriptions, P&IDs, electrical drawings, and existing control logic
- Working with Rockwell ControlLogix and CompactLogix, Schneider Electric PLCs and legacy PLC systems
- Factory testing, field commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting
- Understanding an existing system, diagnosing system problems, and recommending practical, reliable solutions, before making changes
Qualifications
A successful candidate will:
- Have a working knowledge of industrial control systems, instrumentation, and communications
- Demonstrate strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Exercise care and good judgment when working with operating facilities
- Use clear and timely written and verbal communication
- Be reliable in their organization and documentation habits
- Work independently on defined assignments while recognizing when to ask questions or escalate a concern
- Represent CSI professionally when interacting with clients, operators, contractors and vendors
- Have approximately three to eight years of relevant controls or systems-integration experience, or equivalent demonstrated capacity
- Have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
Relevant experience may have been gained through an engineering degree, automation or controls education, military or technical training, systems-integration work, or substantial hands-on industry experience. We will consider candidates with different experience levels if they have strong PLC/HMI/SCADA fundamentals and can demonstrate the ability to grow into the role.
Especially valuable experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be desirable:
- PLCs: Schneider, Rockwell, or Emerson/GE
- Aveva InTouch, Ignition, or comparable HMI/SCADA platforms
- Industrial ethernet, network architecture, telemetry, and remote-site communications
- Firewalls, VPNs, and secure remote access
- Control-system upgrades, conversions, or legacy-system migrations
- System commissioning
- Municipal water or wastewater systems
- Food, beverage, winery, or brewery automation
Position Details
Work structure and schedule
This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position. The primary work location is at a client facility in Antioch, California, with occasional travel to other project sites and CSI work locations as needed.
The normal schedule is weekday business hours; CSI’s senior engineer will remain the principal client contact and handle emergency and after-hours support. Occasional overtime or schedule changes may be required for commissioning, cutovers, or unusual project needs. Overtime must be approved in advance and will be paid in accordance with California law.
This is not a fully remote position. Some programming, documentation, and support work may occasionally be performed remotely with prior approval when project responsibilities and client requirements permit.
Work environment and physical requirements
This position combines computer-based engineering and programming with work at active municipal and industrial facilities. Project-site work may involve exposure to operating equipment, outdoor conditions, noise, uneven surfaces, stairs, ladders, confined work areas, and environments requiring personal protective equipment.
The employee must be able to travel to project sites, move safely through industrial facilities, use standard computer and testing equipment, and perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Additional physical requirements, including any lifting or climbing expectations, will be based on the actual needs of the position.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation
$52–$65 per hour, depending on directly relevant experience and demonstrated capability
The upper portion of the range is intended for candidates who can independently perform substantial PLC/HMI/SCADA work and bring valuable experience in areas such as water systems, telemetry, industrial networking, commissioning, or multiple control platforms.
